A hit Broadway musical filled with well-known songs and huge dance numbers is set to take to the stage in Douglas with support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
The Manx G&S Society will perform Sweet Charity at the Gaiety Theatre from 16th to 21st October, and the Steam Packet Company is lending its support by assisting with the costs of transporting scenery for the show to and from the Isle of Man.
Sweet Charity tells the story of Charity Hope Valentine, a dancer at a seedy New York dance hall, and her whirlwind romance with shy accountant Oscar. Not wanting to spoil her chances, ‘Sweet Charity’ keeps her profession secret but with Oscar about to pop the question, will he discover her wild side?
Val Cowley, Society Chairman and director of Sweet Charity, said: ‘This is a stylish, fun show with a lot of sass featuring extremely popular and well-known songs like Rhythm of Life, Hey Big Spender and If My Friends Could See Me Now. The audience will go on a journey through all elements of life in New York in the 1960s as we follow the story of Oscar and his “Sweet Charity”.
‘Everyone involved is looking forward to bringing the Isle of Man an exciting, modern production and on behalf of the Society I’d like to thank the Steam Packet Company for its ongoing support, which helps make it possible to stage entertainment to the Island.’
The show’s local cast includes Lisa Kreisky as Charity and Neil King as Oscar alongside Gary Corkill, David Lyons, Emma Bowker, Gill Buchanan, Sarah Callow, Victoria Mclauchlan, Joey Wylde and many more talented actors. Tickets, priced from £20, are available now at www.villagaiety.com.
Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘The Isle of Man has an active and talented arts scene, and we are pleased to be able to support companies like the Manx G&S Society to stage productions such as Sweet Charity so Island residents have a rich and diverse programme of entertainment to enjoy throughout the year.
‘It sounds like a fun show and I’m sure everyone involved, as well as everyone in the audience, will have a great time.’
